Meet The “Apparating” Plant

Meet The “Apparating” Plant (Scroll Down for Video of Dr. Struwe)

Dr. Lena Struwe of Rutgers University Discovered and Named “The Apparating Plant”

Apparating Plant

Even if you’ve never read a book or watched a movie (gasp!) in the Harry Potter series, you certainly know who Harry Potter is. The story of the boy wizard and his loyal friends have attracted a loyal following of fans from around the world. In fact, J.K. Rowling’s multi-award winning series of books is so pervasive… it’s even entered the world of flowers.

At the science of plant taxonomy at Rutgers’ Cook College in New Jersey, an assistant professor shared in the discovery of a rare, new jungle plant located in Ecuador. Lena Struwe also happens to be a huge Harry Potter fan.

Much of the original forest in Ecuador has disappeared. Mostly because trees have been cut for lumber or burned to clear for pastureland. Just in Ecuador alone, it’s estimated that 83% of all plant species are near extinction. A much higher level than first thought.

The name of the new plant species is “apparata” which is taken from the term “to apparate” (as in apparition). The term “apparate” is used often throughout the Harry Potter books. It refers to a wizard’s ability to disappear and then reappear elsewhere instantaneously.

The Macrocarpaea Apparata flower is a tall plant with yellowish-white, bell-shaped flowers.

Lena Struwe, being a key figure in the discovery of the new plant and Harry Potter fan, helped to choose the name. Its connection to the world of Harry Potter was deliberate.

This new species of flower is called Macrocarpaea Apparata. Scientists have worked feverishly to save the disappearing vegetation from many of the worlds largest jungles and rain forests. Ecuador is an area that’s been deteriorating dramatically.

The Macrocarpaea Apparata flower was so named because it was discovered by appearing out of nowhere. Hundreds of man hours went into this rare find and new species of plant.

Where is Hogwarts Castle?

Have you ever wondered where the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry really is?

Well, besides being behind the wall of Diagon Alley the Hogwarts Castle can be found in various ancient regions of the United Kingdom.

The exterior of Hogwarts can be found in the county of Northumberland, England. Sitting high on a rolling country hill in the beautiful town of Alnwick is the 900 hundred year old castle.

The Alnwick Castle is in real time the home to the Duke of Northumberland. In the all the Harry Potter movies it sheltered the houses of Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Griffindor.

You may remember the exterior of Alnwick Castle and the grounds as the area of Hogwarts where Harry and his classmates took their flying lessons with Madame Hooch.

Alnwick is a small town and is home to just two and a half thousand people. It’s located near Northumberland National Park and close to a fantastic coastline. Alnwick Castle is a public building so has been renovated several times over the years.

Visitors from the U.K. and around the world come to see the enormous castle. Alnwick Castle receives more than 800,000 visitors each year.

At the Christ Church in Oxford, you can find the staircase the students at Hogwarts used to climb to get to the Great Hall where they had their meals and House choosing ceremonies.

As a matter of fact, if you take a tour throughout Oxford, you’ll find several other locations that were in the Harry Potter movies as well. This includes the Duke Humfrey’s Library which was used as the Hogwarts’ library.

One last reference to Harry Potter locations goes to the Gloucester Cathedral in Gloucester, Scotland.
The Cathedrals enormous and ornate Gothic cloisters were used for many of the interior scenes at Hogwarts.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan and have a chance to visit the U.K. do yourself a favor and make sure you visit at least some of these beautiful, ancient and historic sites.
